Amazon.co.uk Stop Paying Affiliates for PPC Traffic

We’ll it was bound to happen sooner or later, wasn’t it? In September last year Amazon.com stopped it’s affiliates direct linking to its pages using Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing like Google Adwords. Now this is to be implemented on the Amazon.co.uk site from 1/2/2010 (2/1/2010 USA date format).

So come the first of February all affiliates can only use PPC IF they direct the traffic to their own site first.

In addition and I quote direct from the Amazon email I got so that I get it right…

“In addition, as of February 1, 2010 we will no longer pay referral fees on purchases made by customers who are referred to www.amazon.co.uk or www.javari.co.uk via Free Search Results. Free Search Results are links containing an Associate’s tag displayed in a search engine’s free, natural, or organic search results in response to a search query which send customers directly to an Amazon site without the customer first being sent to an Associate’s site and the customer clicking on a link to arrive at the Amazon site.”

So if you are an affiliate who is still direct linking you will need to contact them and change your declared method of advertising if it is stated as PPC. If you don’t then they will delete your account.

You know of course these big guys can do what they want with their advertising program I have no issue with that. But surely giving what two weeks notice is just a bit below the belt isn’t it. Anybody wouldthink they don’t want to look after their affiliates!!

So you have been warned you have until the 1st Feb 2010 to get your house in order.

Your Advice Needed Please

question_mark_w1A slightly different post today! I’m working on a new project and have bought two domain names for it, mainly because I couldn’t decide between the two! Can you help me?

Without going into a lot of major detail it involves setting something up in my local area. The two domains have these keywords in them “thisarea” and “ourturf” Logic dictates that I use the domain name that has “thisarea” in it, however for branding purposes and memorability I quite like the one with “ourturf” in it.

So what do you think, do I go with logic or do I do with my heart? Your comments as always are appreciated.

No Direct & Deep Linking To Amazon From Adwords Reminder

Just a brief post before bed time!

This is just a reminder that from today 1/5/09 Amazon will not be paying out any commission on sales generated from Adwords campaigns that use direct linking to the Amazon site. Any Adwords campaigns that first go to your own landing pages and then link to Amazon are fine.

It should be noted that at this time this is only for Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. As far as I can tell Amazon.co.uk and the other Amazon sites are spared! But that could change.

So don’t forget to pause those Adwords if they link direct or it will be money down the drain! Not sure how they will know but I’m sure they will have figured someway to monitor it all.

I have copied the email below that I originally received for my Amazon.com affiliate.

Dear Amazon Associate:
We’re writing to let you know about a change to the Amazon Associates Program. After careful review of how we are investing our advertising resources, we have made the decision to no longer pay referral fees to Associates who send users to www.amazon.com, www.amazon.ca, or www.endless.com through keyword bidding and other paid search on Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines, and their extended search networks. If you’re not sure if this change affects you, please visit this page for FAQs.
As of May 1, 2009, Associates will not be paid referral fees for paid search traffic. Also, in connection with this change, as of May 1, 2009, Amazon will no longer make data feeds available to Associates for the purpose of sending users to the Amazon websites in the US or Canada via paid search.
This change applies only to the Associates programs in North America. If you are conducting paid search activities in connection with one of Amazon’s Associates Programs outside of the US and Canada, please refer to the applicable country’s Associates Program Operating Agreement for relevant terms and conditions.
We appreciate your continued support and participation in this advertising Program. If you have questions or concerns, please write to us by using the Contact Us form available on Associates Central.
Sincerely,
The Amazon Associates Program
