How The Power of Web 2.0 Made a Site I had Ditched Into A Success

Earlier this year I found a little software product called BANS. It builds simple niches stores based around any ebay category or item, when someone buys something through the store I get paid a commission by ebay.

My first attempt at a store, I messed up basically! Well at least I thought I had! I spent, I don’t know maybe a day or so setting up a little site for ladies golf equipment. Due to my not reading the manual properly (I know RTFM) I got the structure a little wrong so I threw my toys out of the pram got fed up and moved on. I completely forgot about the site for nearly three months.

Then quite by chance I was checking my stats on another site and clicked on my golf Bans stats as well. Imagine the shock I got when I realised it had been getting 10, 15, 20 visitors a day and growing! I had done nothing, absolutely nothing to promote it!

I was shocked, but not so shocked that I didn’t think to rush over to Commission Junction and see if I had made any money. To further add to the strain on my heart I had been generating around £20 ($40 approx) a month for a couple of months!

I know it doesn’t sound much but remember I had done nothing to make these sales happen apart from leave a partially optimized site I’d lost interest in hosted on my server!

Anyway my next move was to work out what I did that must have brought the googlebot over. All I could come up with doing, was adding the site to my del.icio.us bookmarks (a web 2.0 tool).

I knew I hadn’t submitted the site url to google or any other search engine or directory, and that I wouldn’t have stumbled it as I wasn’t at all happy with the site. So my conclusion was that by just simply bookmarking the site so I could find it easily, I had inadvertently got the link picked up and indexed on google and earning me money to boot!

I knew the possibilities and power of Web 2.0 marketing as I had done the 30 Day Challenge last year, but it really hadn’t occurred to me that just using the simple action of bookmarking a site would go on to get me indexed on Google let alone earning money!
