Web 2.0 The New Internet

I spoke recently of some of the sites that are considered to be Web 2.0 sites, in this article I wanted to look a little more at some of the benefits of using web 2.0 properties.

The words in bold are considered Web 2.0 terms.

Content Syndication Many sites exist today with a sole purpose of sharing content that people write for free. Sites such as ezinearticles.

Users create articles send them to the site for approval and if approved they go into the catalogues available for anybody to use on their websites etc. Why do people create free content for others? It’s all about the little bio box at the bottom! The content creator has that space to sell his website. It is a very powerful little box and will often bring the writer of the article a lot of targeted traffic and a way to make money for free.

Visitor Optimization This is a very powerful little phrase and if done correctly can bag you a ton of cash. By building small sites and optimising them for long tailed keywords website owners are bringing to their sites some very targeted traffic, and traffic that is hot and “ready to buy”.

For instance if an internet user types in fishing to Google he isn’t really that bothered about anything specific, just general fishing information. Now if he were to have typed in something like “best carp tackle” (not necessarily in quotes) he is in a buying mood!

So websites optimized for that exact phrase will be much easier to rank for and get lot’s of very targeted traffic. In effect the site is optimised for exactly what the searcher is looking for! As the visitor is getting exactly what he asked for, if the site owner does their job correctly, he may well go on to buy something!

Tagging You will see many sites (including this) that use tagging. Tagging on here is done by me as a way for my visitors to find what they are looking for very easily. For instance this article will have two tags Internet Marketing, and Web 2.0. So anyone landing here can very quickly find information on things they may be interested in.

As you surf the web you may come across times when you yourself tag items. One that springs to mind is the bookmarking site del.icio.us. Again using this site as an example and if I used del.icio.us for bookmarking all my sites I get the option to tag the site to any category I might come up with.

For instance I might tag it with IM or Internet Marketing or make money blog or lynne ivatt. I might use all four, then all I do is click on those tags in my bookmarks and I will find this site again.

If I have used the option to share the site other users of del.icio.us, they will be able to see what I have come across as well. If I use popular tags such as Internet Marketing I could well show up under the “popular tags” feature on the main del.icio.us website! Now there could be an interesting way to promote your site and get some nice traffic!

Just a note when using del.icio.us you don’t use spaces so Internet Marketing would be internetmarketing or it would be seen as two tags internet and marketing, two very different things!

You may well be used to seeing some of these properties that is Web 2.0 is all about interactivity and sharing see you around!
